The Square Card Case App feels very futuristic the first time you use it, and that’s exactly how it’s supposed to feel. This is the future of mobile payments. From Google Wallet and other Near-Field Communication (NFC) services that are in the works to Square’s venture into location-based mobile payments, physical wallets are becoming obsolete and virtual wallets commonplace.
Instead of relying on hardware (like Google Wallet and NFC), Card Case uses the built-in GPS feature in iPhones and Android devices to locate you and let you start a tab with local merchants. All that’s required is the app itself, an account linked to a credit or debit card and your phone in your pocket.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
- Get the app (iTunes | Android Market);
- Sign in or get an account;
- Link that account to a credit or debit card;
- Look for merchants nearby and tap their name;
- Tap “Open My Tab”;
- Walk into that merchant’s store, buy something and just give them your name at checkout;
- Leave (maybe say “thanks” first).
That’s it, that’s the whole process. Now, every time you walk into your regular spot, Square notifies them you’re there, opens your tab and you just pay with your name. A truly customized and painless shopping experience. And don’t worry, your tab expires after a certain amount of time or once you leave. You also get a notification of the addition to your tab, so no mistaken charges.
